When Minecraft: Wii U Edition arrived late last year Mojang, Nintendo and Microsoft promised exclusive Nintendo content in 2016, and now details have been confirmed. The Super Mario Mash-Up Pack will be free and available with an update on 17th May (18th May in Europe), and a disc version of the full game with that pack included will arrive in North American stores on 17th June, with a recommended price of $29.99 in the US. At the time of writing no date has been given for a retail release in Europe.
Before we get to the details, you can see some lovely screens of the Mario pack below.

The pack will feature a whole lot of skins, world and item textures, along with music from Super Mario 64. Some press release details are below.
After downloading the update, players who own the Minecraft: Wii U Edition digital game, which launched last December, will have immediate access to new skins, a Super Mario-themed pre-made world and a set of Super Mario-themed music and item textures. All this new content is inspired by games in the iconic Super Mario series, such as Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine.
Downloading the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack gives players 40 new Super Mario-themed skins, which transform the game's characters into familiar heroes like Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach, and even troublemakers like Bowser, Wario and all seven Koopalings. All the world and item textures in the game will also be redone, providing players the opportunity to create their own Super Mario-themed locations within the world of Minecraft. While building, players will even enjoy listening to the smooth sounds of 15 pieces of music from Super Mario 64. Builders of all ages will love crafting massive new worlds using building blocks inspired by a series as accessible and recognizable as Super Mario.
It's great news that this Wii U-exclusive pack will be free with the game, especially welcome for those that already have the eShop version and want an excuse to go back. No doubt Microsoft and Mojang are hoping this pack will boost sales, too.
Check out the trailer below and let us know if you're excited about the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack.

Really want that, NOW!!!
The news I was waiting to hear. So keen!
Guess I'll have to get Minecraft on WiiU, too, then.
Now I kinda want to buy Minecraft.......
Now that's how to attract more customers on a Nintendo platform.
Yay! Now let's see the European price and release date. The European and UK Nintendo Twitter accounts have had no updates today.
Edit: The update arrives on the 18th of May so hopefully the retail version arrives on 18th June.

Alright, now I'm kind of tempted to get this.
If only I didn't have a million games already in my Wii U backlog
Looks awesome! ...But I'd rather they put the effort into utilizing the gamepad instead!
Still, I'm not sure if this is enough to get me to buy it... already got it for 360/Xbone. Looks really cool though.
Waiting on the disc version
I don't think I would play it on the WiiU, but that actually looks really cool.
I do not own Minecraft, but this is really cool.
Sold !
No interest, to lots of interest in a split second.
Will be waiting for a retail release in Europe though.
If this wasn't 30 bucks for Wii U when I already know it's 20 for 360, I might have gotten this by now.
Ah who am I kidding. This looks pretty cool.
@Whopper744 The physical version is your friend here!
And finally, a well made Princess Daisy skin!!!!
Wasn't interested in Minecraft as I had it a long time ago on 360 but now I want it .... Just not at that price
Well Done. The textures look really cool and retro! The makers of the world did a very good job!
What if the swords were hammers?
Great, now I need to buy my third version of Minecraft!
Heck, I would have paid for it, so I'm thrilled that it's free!
Really cool, but it should've happened years ago. :---)
@Moshugan The Slime Blocks that made Mario jump were introduced to Minecraft very recently.
Ay! When I saw this I was gonna buy it but I saw free so this makes me more happy!
mouth drools
for free 0.0... i'd be willing to pay for that, it looks awesome. i might start playing minecraft again now.
YES!! Daisy gets some love, I'm a happy camper now. Looks like I'll be picking this up for the WiiU. And it's time to recreate some castles.
Y'all are funny. Throw a Nintendo-related skin in a game, and suddenly people are interested in the game. SMH.
More pics in the link below — by my count, there were 41 skins including a couple of surprises in Petey Piranha (let's face it, he isn't getting the attention he did in the GameCube days) and Super Mario World's Rex! (He's hidden in the background of the image of Bowser and company in his castle.)

But whether or not all the generic enemies will be playable or were just well-posed enemies, I don't know.
@BinaryFragger Is it listed w/ the other versions? I tried Amazon US but couldn't find it. For $30 a MC download seems like a lot, but $24 w/ Prime for the disc seems worth it. But if it's listed w/ the others and not as a new game Prime 20% may not apply. (I'm a neanderthal, I like discs and boxes.)
Wow, I feel like that's the first real good gaming news we've had on here for awhile. It's not even a rumour or a leak, real honest to goodness good news. I'm excited and I don't even play Minecraft. If my kids gt it, which I'm almost certain they will now, I will have to run around Delfino Island just because.
So, the 3D version of SMM, maybe Nintendo made them hold off on it. Would have been a nice game for amiibo support, even to just unlock music or sound effects w/ the SM line.
Oh well, good game news is good.
Wow that is awesome. I may have to get it and play with the nephews.
@Mario_maniac Thanks for the link. Pic #7 had F.L.U.D.D. on Mario's back. I doubt it would do anything in game but I'm a big SMS fan so it's a nice touch.
@argh4430 Well truthfully I was always interested in getting it on the WiiU for my son and I to play since we are on my WiiU more than my 360 which I already have it on. It was the higher price tag that kept me away, but I think I have some old games laying around that I haven't touched in ages that should fetch something on the trade in market to ease the price down.
What about Zelda? :0
This looks awesome! And that price tag shows Nintendo really cares about the player/customer.
Wow, surprised Microsoft/Mojang did this! Really cool that the two came together for this! I will gladly own the disc version thanks to stuff like this.
This is gonna make so much money. Pretty cool, even for someone like me, who's not into Minecraft at all.
Now hopefully Zelda and Metroid will show up.
Want.
This is one of the most comprehensive theme packs I've ever seen. If they do any more than this like a Zelda pack or something, I'll be extremely tempted to get Minecraft again, even if I have mixed feelings about the game.
POOCHY!!!
Once I do get the money, I'll get this. I mean, after all, I do have Minecraft everywhere else. I just wish Annoying Orange's Minecraft Server, OrangeCraft, were updated. Unfortunately, that server got... knifed, for being out of date.
Have they added touchscreen support yet? :/
I was hoping the Nintendo content would be a Zelda Mash-Up Pack, instead, but this is a close second of awesomeness.
Nice looks good I'll wait for the physical version.
It almost makes me wanna buy Minecraft again for my Wii U, haha. I already have PS4 edition but haven't played in months.
Oh God..I think I am finally going to have to buy Minecraft...
That ALMOST makes me want to buy this game.
Maybe one day,in a sale...
@Jimmy_G_Buckets All they need now is Zelda and Pokemon packs and they'll get even more people interested
My disinterest has changed on this version of the game. Now if only it were to go on sale...
Looks nice. What more does it includes?
The landscapes on the trailer looked nice, but were they handmade? Or they are new biomes?
FINALLY! After searching high and low, Nintendo and Mojang have finally created the perfect Princess Daisy skin I always wanted!!!
Also, I finally see a skin that I will always use. That Luigi skin is pretty decent if you ask me.
That looks like a tremendous pack! If I played Minecraft I'd have it in a heat beat. As it happens, I've never owned a copy of it nor played it before.
DECENT!
I don't know how DLC works in this game. Does this DLC contain one huge map, or multiple smaller maps?
I have no interest in Minecraft but this looks really nice. I can imagine this being quite a hit for the struggling Wii U.
@memoryman3 Yeaah, well, so it seems. The slime blocks were introduced into the PC version of Minecraft in 2014, though.
But I meant that Minecraft on Wii U should've happened a lot earlier. It had been on the other console a while already. In any case I'm happy that it got on Wii U! Better late than never. I'm sure many people are happy to play it on Wii U.
Funny how the creeper is disguised as a Pokey instead of a Bob omb.
It both fits and doesn't.
Having the villagers as piantas is genious though.
I hope Galaxy representation is in the world.
I picked up a cheap second Wii U a few months back and it had Minecraft pre-installed. I've long been interested in it but barely played it as I just don't have room for it in my life right now, but I'm delighted to hear that I'll be receiving this pack for free and it will certainly tempt me into spending a bit of time on it, then who knows...
This right here...this is fantastic, and if they're hoping to increase sales with this, I'd say it's gonna work. I'm seriously contemplating this now, as is a friend I already play PS4 Minecraft online with.
I'll wait for the disc to appear on amazon UK Then go down in price! Still this'll make my brother really happy he loves Nintendo and Minecraft loads! I think that animal crossing would work really well for it. A fire emblem one would amazing haha
I kinda wish I could get this on my ps vita...
For a few months, I've been trying to decide whether to buy Minecraft on Wii U or Xbox One. Now I know to get the Wii U version.
Now this is actually cool.
@Tsurii, what is a carp?
If only I liked the game. Great that they threw in the SMB 3 angry sun.
@gabric2000 a fish.
I've bought Minecraft twice already and I'm still tempted. Well done Nintendo 😃
Awesome, that physical copy is as good as mine. Hopefully they got other IP exclusive for Minecraft later on too especially Donkey Kong, Legend of Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, Star Fox, Pokemon, and Fire Emblem.
Well, I guess I can't pass this up! I may actually buy a Minecraft texture pack for once! Minecraft Wii U just keeps getting better. On day one, I remember how disappointed I was when I saw that there weren't achievements in it, but then a surprising update solved that! Now it's getting a Nintendo-exclusive skin and texture pack! Awesome
@gabric2000 They meant to put the word "crap". Also, a carp is a fish that you can catch in lakes and rivers.
I've never played minecraft, don't really plan to either, but a free update like this is awesome! Happy for all you minecraft fanatics, hope you can make good stuff with it and it enhances your fun.
It looks great but it does make me wonder why Nintendo haven't done the obvious in remaking Mario 64 in HD, it's still the best Mario game ever made and is more deserving of an update then the recent Zelda remaster
I hope metroid, zelda, and their other properties (kid icarus, f zero, ect) come at a later date
Sorta curious about minecraft now. But I know I won't do much if I buy it so I think I'll pass.
@carlos82 1 remake per game, dude.
@hoshinosammy that ds game from many years ago hardly counts and in any case Twilight Princess is on its second remake anyway. Also Orcarina of Time has arguably had 2, so I think Mario 64 still deserves a HD update
@carlos82 A Gamecube release of the ROM with an emulator doesn't count. And SM64 DS totally counts. New characters, modern character designs and less flat colors. Plus mini games!
@BarryDunne my point was we haven't had a home console HD remake and the ds port was a very long time ago, so in the context of my original point I didn't feel it counted. If one game deserves it then surely Mario's arguably still greatest game should get one and I would expect it to outsell both the Zelda HD remakes the second of which is now on its 3rd console. The ds Mario 64 game was pretty good but I personally prefer the original and never felt the extras improved the experience but it would be boring of we all agreed
@spacepirate thanks.
